Episode 36 - CEUs for SLPs: My Top 5

All right, let's go ahead and talk about some ways to earn CEUs. Okay, so first up is MedBridge. This is one of my absolute favorite sites for CEUs. The quality of the videos and the materials are amazing. And I always come out of each course feeling like I can apply what I've learned in clinical practice. One of my favorite course series on there is all about stuttering. It's done by Scott Yaruss. And I just love just about everything he has to say about stuttering. I saw him speak at ASHA the year before last and I think I have taken every single one of his stuttering courses on MedBridge. But what I really like is that he has some courses on there that touch on the aspects--actually it does more than touch on--he really kind of dives deep into the aspects of counseling for stuttering, which I think many SLPs would appreciate because I've spoken with many SLPs who said that this is an area that they just don't feel comfortable treating. So I will link to that specific course in the show notes if you're interested. And I'm also happy to say that I do have a promo code for you guys that knocks the annual rate down from $275 a year down to $95. Next stop is Northern Speech Services, and this is a site that I really love to use when I'm looking for something specific. So the price tag is a little bit higher because it's not an all inclusive CEUs site. This is a site where you find a course that you like, and then you pay for it individually. But I really do value some of the expertise that you get when you're looking for something in particular. For example, I did a few courses on there. I took a few courses on tongue-tie and orofacial myology a couple years ago. And I was really impressed. I really found exactly what I was looking for. And I came out knowing so much more than I did when I went in. You know, how frustrating it is sometimes when you take a course and you're like, "oh, I'm gonna learn all this stuff." And then you come out and you're like, "yeah, there's really nothing I can do with that." But that was not the case here. I was really, really impressed. And I also recently took a course on there about carryover done by my friend Claudia Doan. I will leave the links to both of those courses in case you're interested in the show notes. I'm not an affiliate with the site, but I do like it.

So the next recommendation is the Pearson site, and this is a great way to get free CEUs, if you are looking for that. Sometimes I feel like the site is not always that easy to navigate, but again, if you're looking for something free, then this might be a good option for you. I will leave a link for you guys in the show notes as well. That will take you right to where the CEUs are located. There's actually a course going on, if you're listening on the day that this airs on Tuesday, May 29th, there's a course going on that's called The Metalinguistic Bridge: Language Competence and Classroom Success. One disclaimer, I did wanna throw in about this site is that generally their free CEUs courses are somehow tied to a paid product in some way or another, which isn't always a bad thing, but I just did wanna be crystal clear and mention that.

Next stop might seem really obvious, but that's the ASHA Convention or even ASHA Connect. Now, you know, like I said, this might seem like a no brainer or even might be thinking, how can I justify the cost? But if you've never been to ASHA, I suggest that you try it at least once and preferably when the conference is in your neck of the woods. It's really great to connect with old friends, spend time with colleagues, and get all your CEUs knocked out for the year in one fell swoop. I believe it's in Boston this year. And so if you live up, you know, in the Northeast, it's an excellent time for you to attend. And also ASHA Connect is going to be in Baltimore this year, I think in July.

And lastly is to, if ASHA is not in your price range, then check out your state convention. So, you know, like I said, if ASHA is just not in the budget or not in an area that's anywhere close to you, then I highly suggest attending your state convention instead. It's a great way to connect with local SLPs, learn about new job opportunities, and earn a great deal of CEUs all in one place. So again, this might seem like a no brainer, but I felt like it was almost so obvious that you could forget it. So I did wanna mention it as well.
